Hello neighbors. My Name is Kenneth DeLeon, and I have lived and worked in the City of East Point since 2000. I am passionately dedicated to enriching the city of East Point and the lives of those who live here.
Born in San Antonio, Texas, in March 1966, I lived in the Dallas area from the age of seven until I graduated high school in 1984. One of six children raised by a single mother after my father's passing, I found myself having to grow up way too soon.
When I was 15, I elected to take part in an after school work program, where I went to school for half of the day, and worked the other half to earn money for my family. From my own experience, I understand the daily challenges and struggles that single head-of -household families face. I understand the amount of hard work and determination necessary to help single parents succeed and I believe that the government must play an active role in helping them succeed.
I joined the United States Marine Corps Reserve immediately upon graduating high school, where I served for over nine years. I'm a veteran in the support of the first Gulf War. While in the Marines I developed the basic principles of leadership and discipline that had served me then and will allow me to serve you when elected. I studied Criminal Justice at Dallas Community College and Computer Science studies at Western Arizona College. I will utilize my training, education, and experience as an Auxiliary Police Major to help bring positive change and reformation in the areas of public safety: Police, Fire and EMT.
My 30 years of work experience includes corporate, government, law enforcement, and owning a small business. Having first hand experience with the challenges that small businesses face, I aim to address these issues while serving on Council. I'm a 25 year veteran with Delta Air Lines where I have worked various positions from entry level through management.
Having worked as a volunteer for many years with community outreach organizations such as Meals on Wheels, Habitat for Humanity, Youth Pride, and numerous local animal rescue shelters, I understand the personal benefits of supporting, helping and learning from the community at large. I will bring these principles of service and selflessness with me to public office.
I'm the founder and current League Governor of a charity sports league, Southern Softpaw League (SSL), founded in 2009. To date, the league has raised tens of thousands of dollars for various local animal charities.
I'm currently serving as a Founding Board Member of Latino LinQ, a community outreach organization that offers counseling, health and human support services and referrals to Latino LGBTQ at high risk.
I served as an East Point representative for the Fort McPherson Planning Local Redevelopment Authority (MPLRA) from March 2006 to December 2010 and am currently serving as former East Point Mayor Joe Macon's appointee to the Fort McPherson Local Implementation Redevelopment Authority (MILRA) and was selected by the Governor of Georgia to continue to serve on MILRA from September 2009 to the present.
While on the MILRA Board, I have built great working relationships with business and community leaders, and elected officials at all levels of government. I will draw upon these ties to bring greater growth and prosperity to the City of East Point.
I had the pleasure of serving as the appointee of former East Point City Councilwoman, the Honorable Sharonda Hubbard, on the City of East Point's Storm Water Advisory Committee from 2011 to 2012.
I also had the pleasure of serving as the appointee of former East Point City Councilwoman, the Honorable Patricia Langford, on the East Point Building Authority from 2012 to 2013.
When elected, I will bring my strong work ethic, years of leadership experience, passion, and my love for East Point to help elevate and enrich our city so that it can reach its full potential.
Candidate, East Point City Council, Ward B
